Coloured ornamental grasses have forged a way into modern gardens, as they are just so versatile. Holding their colour all year round, their range of shades blend perfectly with all year long flower displays. Imperata ‘Red Baron’ Blood Grass – Slowly growing into large clumps, Red Baron boasts 50cm long leaves that are green near the base, turning more intensively red towards its tips. Equally at home in semi-shade as it is full sun, this grass is great for making a statement in pots or can be grown alongside perennials or other grasses in beds. If you really want to make an impact, plant it en masse, in swathes or as an edging plant alongside a path. Ophiopogon ‘Black Dragon Grass’ – Despite being called a ‘grass’, Ophiopogon is in fact a strappy leaved perennial. It is one of the very few so-called ‘black’ plants that are actually black – a year-round matt black backdrop to set off bolder and brighter garden features. It is a very slow-spreading, carpet-forming plant, and can remain undisturbed for years, eventually forming a fair-sized clump. And so that you can get planting immediately, there’s also a 20L bag of professional compost – this is the best compost available, now with reduced peat content. A bespoke professional mix made to our exacting recipe from one of Europe’s leading blenders. It contains 50% composted wood fibre, to open the mix up and get air to the roots, and a precise blend of 3 different grades of peats to balance drainage and water holding. With added lime, it is pH balanced to give the optimum growing conditions and with starter fertiliser and a wetting agent, to ensure even water distribution in pots and container, it will get your plants off to a head-start. On top of that it contains a 6 Month Controlled Release Fertiliser – meaning whatever you grow will get a slow and steady stream of nutrients for 6 Months.
